That was 2012!

The fourth Horsforth Beer Festival, organized by St Margaret’s Church, was our most successful yet, raising around £13,000 for church funds. Almost 1600 people paid to come in over the two days and as usual the “house full” signs went up early on Friday evening, as St Margaret’s Hall reached capacity. For the first time our Twitter followers were able to keep up to date with what was happening inside and in the queue via our feed @hors4thbeerfest.

We continued to admit people well into Saturday evening as there was still a good selection of beer to choose from. Of the 66 beers on offer only 6 were finished at the end of Friday evening, leaving a wide range of beers for festival goers on the Saturday. On Saturday evening there were still 30 beers to choose from, although at the end of the festival less than 20 gallons remained from the 590 gallons on offer at the start.

Ian, owner of the Old Bear Brewery, Keighley (www.oldbearbrewery.co.uk), selected the beers for the festival, scouring the UK for beers and breweries new to the festival. In the main hall there was beer from Scotland and Wales, and all parts of England, from Cumbria to Cornwall, and Somerset to Suffolk, not forgetting a fair sprinkling from God’s Own County.

Phil from The Abbey Inn at Newlay (www.theabbey-inn.co.uk) selected the ciders. There were some favourites from previous years, others new to the festival, and a greater choice of the popular fruit ciders. Alongside the ciders was a range of bottled beers and, for the first time ever, even some wine.

Festival newcomers, North Riding Brew Pub and Kirkstall Brewery, triumphed in the Beer of the Festival awards.
